Drug Categories: Narcotics

Many people do not realize that there are five different categories of drugs. Within those categories are various types of substances that can do more harm than good when used in the wrong capacity. According to dea.org, "Within each class are substances that occur naturally and those created in laboratories (synthetics). When they are used appropriately in the practice of medicine, these substances can have very beneficial properties. When used for non-medical purposes, including the desire to get high, these drugs can cause great damage and even death."

Narcotics are drugs typically prescribed for those in severe pain. There are other uses, but we mainly assume that this drug class can only be obtained by a doctor's prescription. This is unfortunately, not the case. Many addicts can get these drugs without a prescription. Though it is illegal to do so, it still happens quite regularly.

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month. The only way to help yourself and others is to familiarize yourself with the different types of drug classes and realize that even prescription drugs can lead to addiction or worse. Below, we talk in detail about narcotics.
