Drug Categories: An Introduction

Various Categories of Drugs | Drug Rehab in Charlotte NC

When we think about substance abuse, we often lump addicts into one large group. They're just indiviudals addicted to drugs or some other type of substance. In reality, they should be put into categories, just as the different types of drugs are. Each type of drug has a different set of effects and withdrawal symptoms. The type of drug the addict is addicted to will determine how they act and how those that want to help them should do so. There are five classes of drugs that are commonly abused:

  • Narcotics
  • Stimulants
  • Depressants
  • Hallucinogens
  • Anabolic Steroids

According to dea.gov, "Within each class are substances that occur naturally and those created in laboratories (synthetics). When they are used appropriately in the practice of medicine, these substances can have very beneficial properties. When used for non-medical purposes, including the desire to get high, these drugs can cause great damage and even death."

Over the course of the next several blog posts, we are going to take time to go over each class of drug. We will include the types of drugs listed under each category as well as what type of symptoms and signs each one has when used and more.

With October marking the second annual Substance Abuse Prevention Month, it's a great time to educate yourself and those you love about addiction and what it can do to our bodies and more.

National Substance Abuse Prevention Month encourages prevention efforts this month and all year long to ensure the health of teens and young adults. It's an observance to highlight the vital role of substance abuse prevention in both individual and community health and to remember those who have lost their lives to alcohol and drugs.

According to the recently released 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 20.6 million Americans over the age of 12 are addicted to alcohol and drugs; 14.1 million to alcohol, 3.9 million illicit drugs, no alcohol and 2.6 million, alcohol and illicit drugs.

Don't make the mistake of not taking the time to familiarize yourself with all the drug types and categories they fall under. Your knowledge might help someone in need, or someone considering using for the first time.
