Also according to careersinpsychology.org, "Anecdotal statistics provided by independent sources indicate that professionals with a successful private practice are able to generate incomes in the six figures. Salaries in metropolitan areas of high population density typically outperform those in less populated rural locations."

Outlook

According to the United States Bureau of Statistics, when looking at outstanding growth projections for this career, the average rate of growth for employment in other fields is 11 percent. For substance abuse counselors, that rate is 22 percent. The  “U.S. Occupational Outlook Handbook” states that this growth is one of the highest rates of any occupation available in the U.S.

It's been projected that by the year 2022, this career will employ more than 115,000 Americans. That means there will be a little less than 30,000 job openings per year from now until 2022.

A recent issue of U.S. News & World Report ran an article, “The 100 Best Jobs” ranked this career as the 38th best in the nation. It also ranked 22nd best in the nation for best health care jobs.
