Deemed “the most wonderful time of the year”, the holidays are often anything but. Oftentimes, families deal with far more than happy memories and togetherness during the holidays. In fact, it’s probably the most stressful time of the year. Holiday stress is even worse when families must deal with an addict or alcoholic family member.
Holiday Stress | Drug Rehab Charlotte
Feeling bound to watch a loved one suffer from addiction is always stressful. It’s worse during the holidays. Sadly, holidays for an addict are often worse for them, as well. In several previous posts, Legacy Freedom has talked in detail about dealing with addiction and triggers during the holiday, for the addict or recovering addict.
Today, we are going to focus on the family members of those addicts. We are going to offer a few ways to help you deal with your loved ones during this time of year. Knowing how to act towards them and what to say, can be the best way to deal.
Count on Predictability. As you may have come to realize, addicts are predictable. Whether they’re addicted to drugs or alcohol, they’re going to be as predictable during the holidays as they are the rest of the year. If stress and anxiety is the reason for their addiction throughout the year (and it often is for many addicts) it will be amplified during the holiday season.
You might have the assumption that because it’s a holiday, the addicts will forgo their habit in order to enjoy the holiday. The sooner you forget that assumption, the better off the entire family will be. Embrace their addiction and understand that they need drug rehab in Charlotte, before they’re able to actively stop substance abuse.
Expecting them to stop their addiction during the holidays is like expecting them to quit to save their job or relationships. It’s not a possibility until they enter some kind of drug rehab in Charlotte.
Letting go of expectations, planning accordingly, and relieving as much stress as possible is the best way to handle the holidays with a loved one who struggles with substance abuse issues.
In our next post, Legacy Freedom will talk further about how to deal with loved ones who suffer from an addiction problem during the holidays. Being prepared for their predictable behavior is just one step in preparing for the holidays.
We hope that the next few blog posts will help you and your family work through the holidays without being overly stressed about loved ones dealing with addiction.
