Why Alcohol and Boating Doesn't Mix
Alcohol and boating does not mix. Based on the Recreational Boating Statistics report by the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol was the primary contributing factor in 260 recreational-boating accidents in the U.S. in 2015. 91 people died and 228 were injured in those boating accidents. In fact, it's one of the top five leading factors for all boating deaths in the United States. In Ohio, alcohol contributed to 4 boating deaths in 2015, and 20 over the past five years.
Operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol and drugs is also against the law in Ohio. The laws state that anyone is considered to be operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs if he or she has a blood or breath alcohol concentration of 0.08% or greater. If a person is under the age of 21, the BAC must exceed .02%. It is also against the law to operate a boat while under the influence of any other controlled substance or drug, or any combination of alcohol and drugs that renders a person incapable of operating a boat safely.
