As we continue to look at the aftermath of a sudden loss and its impact on the mental health of those left behind we turn our attention to the other ways that survivors attempt to cope. In our previous post, we explored the seeming unexplainable lack of emotion, outbursts of anger or raw emotion, and the need to fill in the blanks when the loss is unable to be explained. Searching for a Charlotte counselor to help you with your grief? Call Legacy Freedom.
One of the reasons that it is so difficult to grieve a sudden or traumatic loss is that they are so senseless. While it may take time to find comfort in being able to attach meaning to these events, finding personal meaning can often give closure. The death of a loved one may take on the form of using that loss to honor or memorialize the deceased through events that celebrate their life or educate on their legacy. Sudden losses or tragedies can heighten awareness about the fragility of life and the importance of gratitude. These experiences are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
Those who have lost someone will often seek out places, things, and experiences that remind them of their loved one. Insomnia, irritability, crying spells, yearning for the deceased, and feelings of desperation are common. Without logic to help them process and cope the survivors are often left to make their own logic and to help push them towards healing. Incidences of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common after a traumatic or sudden loss. The bereaved may experience flashbacks or be triggered by mentions of the person, seeing their personal items moved, or by smells associated with that person.
Helping someone who has experienced a traumatic or sudden loss can be difficult. Often you are asked to repeat the same information about what happened over and over. Be sure to include them in events and any decision making that needs to be done. All of the support people who are around the recently bereaved need to be aware of the vulnerable state they find themselves in and take care to help them work through their emotional and pre-existing life conditions like chronic illnesses, chemical dependencies, and abusive relationships.
