The Most Common Abused Substances in the Workplace

Drug Rehab Raleigh NCWelcome back to our continuing look at drug use in the workplace. In our previous post, we examined the cost of having an employee who abuses drugs or alcohol on staff. Not only do they cost the employer money due to lost productivity, increased health insurance premiums and extensive absences but they also rob the company of morale. More companies are choosing to take a proactive approach to drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace. Many companies are providing their employees with a drug-free workplace program or offering an employee assistance program in an effort to curb drug use in the workplace and empower those employees who struggle with addiction to seek treatment. If you're in need of affordable drug rehab Raleigh NC services, call Legacy Freedom.

Even with these programs in place, many workers still clock in under the influence. While it's hard to ascertain just how many Americans work while they are high or buzzed, what researchers know is that substance abuse costs United States businesses approximately $276 billion per year. Whether it is employee theft, frequent absences, higher health care premiums, workman's compensation claims, or lost productivity, drug and alcohol abusers in the workplace pose a serious threat to a company's bottom line.

Some of the most commonly abused substances in the workplace are:

  • Prescription Medications - It is estimated that approximately 8.8 million Americans misuse or overuse their prescription drugs. Depressants, stimulants, and opioids prescribed by physicians are readily available, and prescription medication doesn't draw much attention when used in the workplace. However, these drugs are powerful, and many are easy to become addicted to. An employee under the influence of a prescription medication may make poor decisions, fail to act appropriately, or endanger other employees.
  • Marijuana - The number one illegal drug found at work is marijuana. While many states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana, the federal government maintains that weed is illegal. As a result, employers are allowed to test for and act upon positive test results, regardless of why the drug was used. Pot promotes inattentiveness, decreased productivity and increased amounts of missed work for employers. Marijuana leads to 85 percent more injuries and 55 percent more industrial accidents. Those who test positive for marijuana have an accident rate at work that is 75 percent higher than those who test negative.
  • Synthetic Marijuana - Causing many of the same effects on the user as natural marijuana, the drug has some serious physical side effects that can pose hazards to the user and to the workplace. Outbursts of violent behavior, seizure, strokes, heart attacks, brain damage, extreme paranoia, and anxiety are just some of the side effects that users of this drug have reported.
  • Methamphetamines - Wildly popular with those ages 24 to 35, uppers, crystal, meth or ice is the drug of choice for those who want to be alert and going strong for hours on end. Not only are these drugs highly illegal they also force employees to frequently take sick days and experience highly unpredictable and violent behavioral outbursts.

Alcohol in the workplace is more common than employers probably realize. More than 24 percent of workers admitted to drinking during the workday at least once in the last twelve months according to a survey conducted by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). Another study carried out by the NCADD also found that 15.3 percent of U.S. workers reported drinking during the workday, before work, and working under the influence. Alcohol is the most abused drug in America, so it comes as no surprise that 35 percent of those who were admitted to the emergency room for an injury sustained while at work were considered at-risk drinkers. Among those who were admitted to the ER for workplace injuries, 16 percent were drinking at the time the incident or injury occurred. When interviewed, 20 percent of managers and workers across a variety of professions and industries shared that a coworker's drinking, either on the clock or off, had put their safety and productivity at risk. The NCADD also discovered that an astonishing 11 percent of fatal workplace accidents involved alcohol. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) estimates that alcohol-related costs to employers, including absenteeism, range from $33 billion to $68 billion per year. OPM also estimates that alcoholics who fail to receive treatment experience rates of absenteeism of four to eight percent. Spouses and family members of alcoholics also experience absentee rates at about the same percentage.
