More College Students Smoking Pot Than Cigarettes

Drug Rehabilitation in Asheville NCLess than four years ago, cigarettes were the number one choice for college students looking for a substance to smoke. While tobacco is legal and isn't always considered a drug, it very much is. It's addictive and harmful for your body.

Now, in 2015, marijuana has become the most popular choice for young adults. Why? It's hard to say, exactly. It could be a result of the recent legalization of pot in various states. It could be that pot is now easier to access for whatever reason. Researchers conducting the University of Michigan's 'Monitoring the Future' study theorized that much of the increase may be due to the fact that public perception of the dangers of marijuana use has shifted dramatically in recent years with its legalization in a growing number of jurisdictions.

Regardless of why, a great deal of college students are smoking pot daily. If they're not doing it every day, they're at least smoking it every other day. This could mean that they need drug rehabilitation in Asheville NC.

According to washingpost.com, in 2014, 5.9 percent of of college students were smoking marijuana daily or near-daily. That compares with 3.5 percent in 2007.

The study done by the University of Michigan also shows that 55% of 19- to 22-year-old high school graduates viewed regular marijuana use as dangerous in 2006, while just 35% saw it as dangerous in 2014.

This is causing alarm in and around campuses as marijuana use among young adults can cause issues. Pot is considered a gateway drug. This means that it opens the door for other, harder drugs. In fact, the same study also stated that cocaine rose in popularity. The number of students reporting they’d used cocaine in the past year rose from 2.7% in 2013 to 4.4% in 2014. The numbers might seem insignificant, but any rise in the use of a serious drug like cocaine is worrisome.

Administrators of colleges and parents alike are worried that young adults are using pot as a therapy drug to help them cope with the transition from high school to college. There's a lot of pressure on kids while they're away from home. Thankfully though, with the rise of pot usage, the number of college students getting professional help for depression, stress and anxiety is growing, as well. It is our hope that this means the rise in marijuana use is just a result of it now being legal and that it will decline again, very soon.

Transitioning from high school to college can be stressful and anxious. It is very different from what most teens are used to. They go from living with their parents to living alone, essentially. Even when they're in the dorms, life is very different. They must be more responsible and motivate themselves. Talk with your college aged kids as much as possible about how to deal with stress and emotions. Remind them that they have options other than drugs or alcohol when things get tough.
