The end of 2016 was quite a busy for drug busts in central North Carolina. December saw one of the largest marijuana busts in the history of Randolph county as well as two more raids. More than 200 marijuana plants were found growing in Asheboro North Carolina. A couple of hours later, in the same town, almost 600 marijuana plants were found. In addition to growing weed, they were also stealing power from the power company in the area. While it's still being investigated, the police are confident that these situations are all connected. Why? According to wncn.com, Sheriff Robert Graves of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office states that it's “The same type set up. The gutted out modular type home, full of plants. The other buildings were likewise. Same type irrigation system, same lighting, stealing power, all three of these houses seem to be set up exactly the same. Cookie cutter type situation.” The sheriff also states that “It’s a very big deal for us. I feel like it’s very sophisticated, it’s taken a lot of thought and planning to put these houses together, and for this growing operation. It has the appearance that it could be certainly, whoever is doing it, has a lot of knowledge and experience to put all of this together.”
The total value for the combined 800+ plants is one million dollars. The police department assume that this is a professional operation and not one that was planned and executed by those that don't have much experience in growing and selling.
Yet another instance happened weeks later, as well. This bust included more than 150 plants and at least 150,000 dollars worth of marijuana. It's uncertain what is causing the massive increase in the number of people growing this drug, but it is a problem that police are continuing to monitor and raid.
So far, two men have been arrested in these cases. The men are each being held under a bond of $350,000. They were charged with the following, according to wncn.com:
- Trafficking of marijuana
- Manufacturing of marijuana
- Felony possession of marijuana
- Felony maintaining a dwelling to store a controlled-substance
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Felony larceny
- Property damage
As the situation progress, we will keep you posted on this and other instances where the police have become involved in a drug related crime.
