Can Anti-Anxiety Meds Cause Dementia?

Drug Rehabilitation in Asheville NCBenzodiazepines are a classification of prescription medication that helps to treat anxiety and panic disorder. These medications can also be used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder or insomnia and other similar conditions. If you need quality drug rehabilitation in Asheville NC, call Legacy Freedom for help.

Many people take this medication in hopes of lowering their symptoms for various psychiatric conditions. Brand names of this type of medication include Xanax, Ativan, Valium, Klonopin and more. Benzodiazepines were approved by the FDA during the 1960s. They were considered a safer alternative to barbiturates, which were more commonly used pre-1960.

While most people consider these types of medication safe for treatment of anxiety, new research states otherwise. It is likely that benzodiazepines could pose a risk for dementia with long term use. Long term use is anything over three months.

Anti-anxiety meds are typically prescribed on an "as-needed" basis. Rarely are they prescribed for everyday use. However, there are some people that take them every single day. When this is the case the risk for dementia greatly increases.

Helene Alphonso, DO, Director of Osteopathic Medical Education at North Texas University Health Science Center and a board-certified psychiatrist, states that “Current research is extremely clear and physicians need to partner with their patients to move them into therapies, like antidepressants, that are proven to be safer and more effective. Due to a shortage of mental health professionals in rural and underserved areas, we see primary care physicians using this class of drugs to give relief to their patients with psychiatric symptoms. While compassionate, it’s important to understand that a better long-term strategy is needed.”

Alphonso also states that “It’s imperative to transition older patients because we’re seeing a very strong correlation between use of benzodiazepines and development of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. While correlation certainly isn’t causation, there’s ample reason to avoid this class of drugs as a first-line therapy."

As you can see, the risk for taking anti-anxiety meds can be risky. It's important to know that other options are available.

It's important to understand that the link between dementia and benzodiazepines is still being studied. Also, if you are taking this medication and worried about whether or not it's causing or can cause dementia, be sure to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss the risk.
