The first step to avoiding relapse this holiday season is to plan your events and activities carefully. Try not to get hit with unexpected things to do. Also, plan your time wisely so that you are not alone during times when you should be with loved ones.
What you planned your events and activities, also be selective in who you spend your time with. It's important to have a support system that will help you through this time. If there are toxic family members who might lead you to relax, stay away from those individuals. Often times, family and friends can put unrealistic demands on us during the holidays. Practice saying no in situations where you're too stressful or are you worried that stress can lead you to substance abuse.
Make a list of everything that you might do or say in a situation that you find stressful or difficult. These words or actions should be positive and in your best interest. If you're faced with an uncle who drinks a lot of alcohol, consider what you might say to him if he offers you a drink. Also, have an exit strategy in place just in case you need to avoid him during the season. Be sure to review the list several times before putting your words and actions to use.
