1. Drink water.
Dehydration is one of the reasons you get a headache the next day. Drink a lot of water before and during the party. A good rule of thumb is to drink a full glass of water between each alcoholic beverage. Gatorade is a good choice, too, because it replenishes your electrolytes. Keep some in your fridge to drink before you go to bed.
2. Eat something.
You want to have food in your stomach to help absorb the alcohol, so be sure to eat before you go out. Carbs and foods high in fat are the better choice in this situation, even if they may not be in general. If you want to go a healthier route, asparagus is supposedly able to prevent hangovers because of the enzymes.
3. Watch out for bubbles.
Most of us toast with champagne at midnight on New Year’s, but those bubbles carry the alcohol into your bloodstream faster than your liver can process it. One glass will be okay, but don’t try to drink the whole bottle.
4. Watch out for the dark drinks, too.
Cognac, brandy and whiskey all contain congeners, which is a chemical known to make you feel bad in the morning. Red wine has high levels of it, too, so it’s also a culprit for headaches the next day.
5. Slow down.
Being a responsible drinker is knowing that pounding the drinks is only going to lead to a shorter night and a hangover in the morning. Sip your drink rather than chugging it. Try to make it last an hour. The body metabolizes about ¾ of an ounce of alcohol each hour.
6. Eat fruit.
If you can manage it, eat fruit before bed to raise your blood sugar levels naturally. Bananas have potassium that helps with headaches, while apples and pears have natural fructose. But it doesn’t count if it’s the fruit in your sangria.
7. Get some sleep.
After you’ve paced yourself all night, came home and drank water or Gatorade, and maybe had a snack, you should plan to sleep for eight hours. If it’s a work night and you can’t sleep in, your body won’t be able to recover as fully.
If you find that you still have a hangover when you wake up, avoid the temptation to eat a greasy hamburger and instead go for a healthy breakfast of eggs, whole grain toast and OJ. It has been suggested that having a Bloody Mary or other drink with alcohol can cure a hangover, but they are essentially just keeping your body from recovering from drinking. Leave the champagne out of the OJ for now.
