Here are few startling facts about athletes and drug use from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. These will give you an idea as to why substance abuse among professional and student athletes is such a big deal. From these findings, we see a scary trend that leads us to believe that these habits are starting way too early.

Pain Meds

  • Almost one fourth of all student-athletes reported using prescription pain medication
  • Almost twenty three percent of student-athletes have used pain medication within the past year
  • About six percent of the student-athletes used pain medication without having a prescription

ADHD Medication

  • Many student-athletes at the NCAA level are using ADHD medications to keep up with schoolwork
  • About nine percent of the surveyed student-athletes reported using these meds without a prescription
  • Sixteen percent of all student-athletes are using ADHD medication with or without a prescription

Professional and Olympic Drug Abuse

  • From 1968 to 2008 there were 21,849 drug tests conducted for just the Summer Olympics. Results show 105 cases of doping violations. For the Winter Olympics during the same timespan shows 22 positive results from 7,783 drug tests
  • Martina Hingis, a five time Grand Slam tennis champ, was banned from competition for two years after testing positive for cocaine in 2007
  • Between the years 1990 and 2010, over 40 Chinese swimmers failed drug tests. This was more than triple the amount of any other nation's swim team during the same time frame
  • For NFL football players, 52% of retired players reported using opiate based painkillers during their professional career. Of these 52%, 71% reported abusing the drugs and and 15% reported that they had abused painkillers within the last 30 days
