Anxiety disorders are broken into 6 main types or disorders. In some cases, a person may experience more than one type of anxiety disorder.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder: The most common type of anxiety disorder. Chronic, exaggerated fears and worries about daily life are prevalent. Leaving the house or interacting with a neighbor may cause an overbearing amount of stress and induce panic. They anticipate the absolute worse in every situation even when the situation doesn’t seem stressful or intense. Anxiety can also cause physical distress like IBS, muscle tensions, headaches and nausea.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Individuals with this disorder will obsessively do repeated tasks or rituals. They believe that if they skip the ritual then something bad will happen. In some cases this is the result of a past trauma, in others it's a learned avoidance response. This includes actions like repeated counting of certain words or actions, open and closing of doors and windows numerous times, saying certain phrases before doing a task, being obsessively neat, and lots more.
Phobias: An extreme fear of objects, people or places. In many cases, people will be afraid of something that is relatively harmless. Individuals will experience heart palpitations and panic when confronted by the item or situation that causes their fear. These phobias can severely limit daily functioning and interactions.
Panic disorder: Characterized by debilitating panic attacks. Suddenly feeling unable to breathe, breaking out in cold sweats and heart racing. These attacks can come on without warning and cause even more panic in the person if they try to fight the onset of the attack. Some cases they can be so severe that people believe they are having a heart attack. A panic attack resembles many of the same symptoms like heart palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath, cheat pain, dizziness and abdominal discomfort.
Post-traumatic Stress disorder or PTSD: Shows itself after a traumatic experience like rape, molestation, war, witnessing fatal accidents, or surviving violence. These individuals will experience nightmares and flashbacks reliving the trauma repeatedly. It is difficult to pin point the triggers for these incidents without proper treatment and management of PTSD.
Social Anxiety Disorder: A complete and irrational fear of dealing with people in a social environment. People who suffer from social anxiety disorder tend to be quiet and mostly keep to themselves. Afraid of being judged by others, they will avoid being in a social surrounding by any means necessary. They fear that they will do something embarrassing or humiliating, so avoiding it all together is used to protect themselves.
