Have you ever wondered if there's a link between your ancestry and mental illness? If so, you're not the only one. For decades, individuals have been questioning this. In 2013, a study was done on the link between genetics and mental health. This research was the biggest study done on mental health at the time. It followed 60,000 individuals with European ancestors. For holiday mental health facilities in Asheville, NC, look no further than Legacy Freedom. Call today to learn more.
According to 23andme.com, "The scientists, led by Dr. Jordan Smoller from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, looked at five different forms of mental illness: autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, major depression disorder, and schizophrenia. They found four different genetic associations with mental illness in general, and surprisingly they discovered that three of the four associations were involved in all five conditions. This means that the same genetic variants involved in depression may also be involved in schizophrenia. This genetic similarity between different forms of mental illness was suspected from previous studies in which twins would have different forms of mental illness."
This study gives us insight into how our relatives might be a precursor to our personalities as well as the state of our mental health. For example, if your mother and grandmother suffer from extreme anxiety, it's possible that it could be passed on to you. It might not be in the most extreme form, but general anxiety could be experienced.
Another example of this comes from a grandmother who was abandoned as a child. Though she was adopted into a loving, nurturing family, she still inherited a predisposition for depression from her biological family. She might be happy, loving, and rarely sad, but the possibility of depression remains, especially considering she knows her family abandoned her as a child. As a biological grandchild develops and grows, it's possible for them to inherit a predisposition for depression, as well.
Our ancestors' life experiences could, in fact, affect our emotional expressions, genes in the brain, and our personalities.
This information is something to consider should you be experiencing symptoms of mental illness. It could be helpful in finding the root cause of your mental condition. At Legacy Freedom, we believe in finding the root cause so that treatment can be tailored to the needs of those suffering.
