Amazon and Mental Illness?

Therapist In Greensboro, NCWe all love shopping on Amazon. It's something that has become a favorite pastime and often a necessity for those that can't get out and physically do their own shopping. Many people have a Prime membership that offers 2-day shipping. Coming home to a Prime box or two is like a mini Christmas morning or impromptu birthday! Throughout all our excitement when it comes to receiving our Amazon goods, we rarely stop to think about the workers behind the process of getting orders pulled, filled and shipped quickly. If you need a therapist in Greensboro, NC, call Legacy Freedom.

Unfortunately, working for Amazon is a grueling job that can be hard on employees, both physically and mentally. The company has warehouses all over the world. In particular, a warehouse in the U.K. has been in the spotlight for their working conditions.

In 2013, the BBC reported that they had investigated the warehouse and were surprised to find that a few positions within Amazon's warehouse are quite taxing.

According to BBC.com, "Undercover reporter Adam Littler, 23, got an agency job at Amazon's Swansea warehouse. He took a hidden camera inside for BBC Panorama to record what happened on his shifts. He was employed as a 'picker', collecting orders from 800,000 sq ft of storage. A handset told him what to collect and put on his trolley. It allotted him a set number of seconds to find each product and counted down. If he made a mistake the scanner beeped."

This series of duties went on for 10.5 hours on a night shift. By the end of the shift, the employee was tired, severely stressed and anxious from having to work on a tight schedule for an extended period of time.

This employee walked over 11 miles on that one shift and had to keep his "picking" rate up to standards to keep from receiving disciplinary action.

Many times, we don't stop to think about what our job can do to our mental state. It's important to recognize that stress, anxiety and depression can occur when we aren't taking care of ourselves. That's why it's important to take a short break every couple of hours. Even just five minutes can make you feel better all day and combat stress and anxiety.
