Mixing Alcohol and Pot Increases Driving Dangers

Asheville NC Alcohol RehabAlcohol is one of the most abused substances all over the world. Especially here in the US, people tend to drink too much. Drinking in excess can be dangerous for medical reasons as well as for increasing the likelihood of injury, including car accidents. Unfortunately, drinking and driving is a common problem. In fact, many people do it without thinking twice. Because alcohol alters perception it can lead to being reckless while driving. As if alcohol use while driving wasn't dangerous enough by itself, some individuals are now mixing alcohol and marijuana before they drive. If you're drinking or smoking too much, call our Asheville NC alcohol rehab and drug treatment center today for help!

Sadly, this is causing numerous fatal car crashes and even more issues with other types of charges. Even more, people who use marijuana and alcohol and then drive vehicles are at a higher risk to be in a car crash that involves two vehicles.

A study done in recent years shows that there's a significantly higher risk when mixing alcohol and marijuana and then driving. Researchers found after studying almost 15,000 fatal two-vehicle crashes between the years of 1993 and 2014, that often the responsible party tested positive for alcohol, marijuana or both. According to Guohua Li, MD, DrPH, professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health, "The risk of crash initiation from concurrent use of alcohol and marijuana among drivers increases by more than fivefold when compared with drivers who used neither of the substances."

"While alcohol-impaired driving remains a leading cause of traffic fatalities in the United States, driving under the influence of marijuana and other drugs has become more prevalent in the past two decades," according to Dr. Li. Li is also a founding director of Columbia University's Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention. She also states that "Countermeasures targeting both drunk driving and drugged driving are needed to improve traffic safety."

It's not often that, even though most people know the consequences of driving drunk, they actually think about what could happen. Before your friend or family member drives off drunk, remind them what could happen. They will go to jail if caught, or worse, hurt or kill themselves or someone else.

It's possible you don't have a problem abusing substances and driving but someone you love does. It's hard watching a loved one go through this difficult situation. It's also a troublesome thing to go through alone.
