Based on a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, death from alcohol poisoning is more prominent in America than we once thought. As a matter of fact, by the end of the day today, six people will die from overdosing on alcohol. We've been writing a lot recently about how risky overdosing can be to one's health. Overdosing from drugs has been known to lead to death, but few seem to realize that overdosing from alcohol is easier and happens just as much, perhaps even more. Alcohol poisoning is defined as anytime a person consumes so much alcohol that it becomes toxic to the body's systems. This usually happens after a binge drinking situation. Binge drinking is when men consume five or more alcoholic drinks in a few hours, and women drink four or more in the same time period. Consequently, some earlier studies state that the majority of the 38 million Americans who have participated in binge drinking said they would actually drink seven to eight drinks in the two to three hour limit. This would happen four times per month on average, they said.

Alcohol poisoning starts when your liver can't keep up with the amount of alcohol in your body. Since alcohol is a toxin, your liver has to filter it out of your bloodstream. When alcohol levels are too high, the liver can't filter it out, the alcohol backs up into your bloodstream and the concentration levels become too high. This can have a severe impact on your mental and physical states. Some of your body's systems will not function properly and you could go into respiratory distress because you're not breathing enough. You could also aspirate and choke on your own vomit. Alcohol poisoning can also cause you to become unconscious and you could actually slip into a coma. A few signs of the beginning stages of alcohol poisoning include severely slurred speech, gradual loss of coordination, and excessive vomiting.

When you hear the term binge drinking, you often think about rowdy college students. While this is true to some extent, this group also gets a bad rap for binging. Based on the CDC's study, white males between 35 and 64 years old die more from drinking too much, in fact this demographic accounts for almost 76% of these types of deaths.

According to the report, groups that identified as American Indians and Alaska Natives have the most alcohol poisoning deaths per million people. The state with the highest alcohol poisoning deaths per million people was Alaska, whereas Alabama has the least. Out of these deaths, thirty percent were considered alcoholics. According to 2006 figures, these alcohol-attributed deaths also cost the country about $223.5 billion in terms of lost workplace productivity and in the number of accidents created.
