Alcohol Free Holiday Drinks
Glogg is a traditional drink served during the holidays in Sweden and Finland. It’s a perfect after dinner drink to have while you sit around the fire and enjoy the Christmas tree.
1 piece of cheesecloth
3 whole cardamoms
8 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 small orange rind
3 cups water
1/2 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup blanched almonds
7 cups dark red grape juice
Tie the cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon stick and orange rind in a cheesecloth. Place in water and bring to boil. Simmer covered for 10 minutes, then add raisins and almonds. Simmer for another 10 minutes, and then stir in grape juice. Bring to a boil, then immediately remove from heat. Put into a container along with the spice bag and store it overnight. When you’re ready to serve it, reheat it and take out the spice bag. Serve with sugar or honey. Makes 12 cups.
Cherry Mint Spritzer
For something a little fruity and fizzy, this drink will hit the spot if you’re craving more of a traditional cold “mocktail.” It’s great for New Year’s parties.
1 cup pitted fresh or frozen (thawed) cherries
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, plus 4 sprigs for garnish
8 teaspoons sugar
1/4 cup lime juice
3 cups cherry-flavored seltzer
Divide cherries, mint leaves and sugar among four medium glasses. Mash everything together with the back of a wooden spoon. Stir in lime juice. Fill glasses with ice and top with seltzer. Garnish with mint sprigs. Makes 4 mocktails.
This drink combines fruit and vanilla with hot cider to make a unique and festive drink for the holidays. It will also make your home smell nice when you’re boiling the fruits and spices.
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
3 pears, chopped into bite-size pieces, divided
2 quarts apple cider
1 lemon, halved and sliced
1 tablespoon ground allspice
1 cup fresh cranberries
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
Combine water, sugar, ginger and one pear in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Strain out the solids and return the mixture to the pan. Add the remaining pears, cider, lemon and allspice, and heat over medium-high heat, stirring often, for 15 minutes.
Add cranberries and vanilla and reduce the heat to medium-low (the liquid should be simmering, not boiling). Let simmer for 10 minutes more. Serve in heat-safe mugs. Makes 10 servings.
Spiced Hot Cocoa
If you need something to serve at a cookie swap party, hot chocolate will hit the spot. You can use regular cocoa mix and add a little flair with spices you already have in your cabinet.
4 cups prepared hot cocoa with 1% milk
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
4 cinnamon sticks
Combine cocoa, nutmeg and chili powder. Pour into mugs and serve with a cinnamon stick. Makes 4 servings.
