Addiction Recovery and Prioritizing Your Life

Asheville drug and alcohol treatment centerOvercoming addiction and starting a new journey in recovery is a wonderful, yet difficult thing. Transitioning from our Asheville drug and alcohol treatment center into recovery is like starting a new life. You may need a new job, lifestyle, hobbies, and possibly new friends. Creating a new life after drugs can be exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. The best first step to starting on the right foot is by prioritizing your life after completing time at a drug treatment center and during addiction recovery.

It's best to start prioritizing life by setting aside time to plan. As we mentioned in our previous post, managing your time during addiction recovery is key. You don't want to have too much down time, yet you don't want to overwork yourself, either. Setting aside time to plan is a great way to prioritize life.

Use this time to set short-term and long-term goals throughout your recovery. Also include action plans to go with these goals.  What's the best way to go about planning these goals and action plans? Find a quiet room at home, take a trip to the library or coffee shop. Then, set aside one hour each week to go there and plan.

During this hour, think about where you've been and what you've already accomplished. Entering recovery is quite an accomplishment, on its own. Then, think about where you'd like to be. Consider what you'd like to do within the next month, six months, and then in the next year. Are you looking for a new job? Set a goal to have one within the next month. Would you like to run a marathon? Plan to do so within the next six months.

Setting goals can be difficult if you have no hobbies or ambitions. Prioritizing your life during recovery also means finding new things you're interested in. Take up bike riding, gardening, photography or other hobbies that interest you. Even if you have had an interest in certain things for years, but never acted on them, now's the time! Use these new hobbies to help set your goals and prioritize them in your overall life.

Another important yet difficult aspect in the process of prioritizing your life during recovery is to identify triggers. Your main goal in recovery is to keep from relapsing. Steering clear of triggers for a while is the only way to do this. Triggers might be lurking all around, so it's important to take time to identify them. Do you drive by an old bar hangout on the way to work? Change your route. Are your friends the reason you began using drugs? Consider finding new friends and avoiding old ones. Did family drama throw you into the downward spiral of addiction? Avoid those family members. It might be difficult but it's essential and must be prioritized. You'll eventually learn to cope with these triggers so that you won't be tempted to use again. Until then, work with a trusted support system to help you identify and avoid any and all triggers in your life.

Prioritizing your life during Asheville treatment and addiction recovery is the only way to avoid a relapse. We hope these tips help you do just that.
