Drug Treatment in Charlotte: Addiction Prevention Tips for Parents
Taking a tough stance when it comes to substance abuse is the only way to help our children say NO. If they know their parents will “kill them” if they drank alcohol or tried marijuana, they’re less likely to actually do it. In addition, making the decision to be the bad parent when it comes to substance abuse and letting children know, up front, that it’s not OK to try drugs or alcohol, allows children to have a real reason to offer their friends on why they’re not using.
Be the reason your children don’t try drugs or alcohol. Let them know that you’ll be angry and devastated. That alone may be the only reason they decide to say NO to drugs and alcohol.
Take time to get to know your children’s friends. Knowing who your children hang out with, who they’re inviting over to your house, can really help you prevent them from substance abuse issues. Encourage your kids to bring their friends over so you can have a chance to really connect with them and get to know them better. Invite them over for dinner or movie night. Make them feel welcomed in your home. You’ll be surprised at how much their friends will open up to you.
Get to know the parents of your child’s friends. While you get to know your children’s friends, it’s a great idea to get to know their parents, as well. Learn the way they parent, how they might handle a negative situation and find out whether or not they offer adequate parental supervision when your child is in their home. If they don’t currently have the same rules about drugs and alcohol use, share your thoughts with them. Help them understand what you’ve learned about helping your children say no to drugs and alcohol.
