A new study shows that depression has been linked to acne. Those who struggle with skin problems know how difficult it can be to deal with the physical, emotional, and mental effects of this problem. Unfortunately, acne has been shown to significantly increase depression in those who suffer from it long term. If you're suffering from constant sadness, call Legacy Freedom and ask about our affordable depression therapy in Asheville, NC.
Allure magazine reports that "In a study published earlier this week in the British Journal of Dermatology, researchers found data to back up that claim after analyzing patient records between the years 1986 and 2012 from a large primary care database in the United Kingdom. They found a compelling connection."
According to the lead author of the study, Isabelle Vallerand, "In the first year following an acne diagnosis, we were most surprised to find that these patients have a 63 percent increased risk of developing depression compared to patients who did not have acne."
With the rising popularity of social media, editing photos, and filters that can be applied through smart phone apps, low self-esteem is becoming a serious problem. Those who suffer from acne see flawless photos online and assume that it’s real life. The filters can cover up blemishes, wrinkles, acne, and other skin conditions that are perceived to be unattractive.
Vallerand also states that "This study confirms what people with acne have long felt, which is that acne may have a profound impact on your self-esteem. Our study shows that people with acne are at a much greater risk of having true clinical depression and not just a sad mood."
When we think about it, it’s no wonder low self-esteem is a continuing factor among those who use social media regularly. Seeing beautifully crafted flawless photos constantly can make anyone feel bad about themselves.
